There is a particular kind of becoming that no one writes brochures about — the kind

that happens between Tuesdays, in the unremarkable hours when no one is watching and nothing is being decided.

that happens between Tuesdays, in the unremarkable hours when no one is watching and nothing is being decided.

I used to mistake it for stalling. The years I now think of as most formative were, at the time, the years I considered most wasted. I was not building a career. I was not, by any visible measure, getting anywhere.

But something was being arranged. Some interior furniture was being moved into its proper room. I only noticed in retrospect, the way one notices a tide has come in by finding the boat afloat.
