NIKKI POWELL
I'm a storyteller. I like to work with stories that make a difference — to a filmmaker, a child, a community, or an organization. I aim to inspire people with the stories I tell. I've done my share of professional work too.
When I take on a project, I start by asking clients what the film is about and understanding their take on it — their vision, their needs — before deciding how to approach the cut. I'm an editor, not a cutter. I like to understand the characters, feel the pulse of the story, and immerse myself in it before choosing my takes. I feel a strong need to connect with the story before I begin editing. Whether that means talking to the filmmaker, speaking with the actors, researching the background, or meticulously watching all the footage — I do what it takes to make that connection.
Fiction and documentary stories are where my heart lies. But that doesn’t mean I shy away from other genres. I've worked with ads, corporate films, and instructional videos too.
Every storyteller needs tools. Mine are Adobe Premiere Pro and FCP X (Apple Certified User). I also have a working knowledge of Adobe After Effects, Motion Graphics. I'm always adding new tools to this list, but my ability to unravel a good suspense or stretch out a touching moment has never been limited by technology.
I have an MFA in Digital Cinema from National University, San Diego - Distinction with a 4.0 GPA
